A Southeast Asian Perspective, With a Global Language

A reflection on how contemporary floristry in Kuala Lumpur can move beyond decoration – towards design, identity, and everything living. Floristry in Kuala Lumpur is often associated with weddings, celebrations, and special occasions. But at Flos Cotidie, we believe flowers should be part of everyday life.

Redefining floristry in Southeast Asia through design, philosophy, and floral language.

Being based in Malaysia gives us a perspective that is both geographically and creatively distinct. Our region offers a richness of tropical materials, sculptural foliage, fruits, seed pods and botanical forms rarely central to traditional Western floristry. At the same time, the realities of our climates and supply chain mean that many delicate, small-scale blooms commonly associated with European floral aesthetics are not naturally available in abundance locally, and that differ entirely from the temperature flowers and palettes traditionally associated with Western Floristry. Because of this, imported flowers remain an essential part of our practice, importing flowers is never about simple recreating Western aesthetics.
Floristry in Kuala Lumpur continues to evolve, so that at Flos Cotidie, we believe Southeast Asian floristry should not be a direct imitation of the West. Our philosophy begins with learning- deeply studying international floral traditions, design systems, and aesthetics foundations from different cultures and regions. We learn them not to replicate them, but to understand the logic behind them. To dissect their principles. To analyse their structures. To identify the philosophies that shape them. Only then can those ideas be reconstructed through our own context. This means combining imported blooms with local materials not out of necessity alone, but with intention – recognizing the differences in texture, weight, movement, climate behavior, and cultural familiarity each material carries.

A contemporary floral perspective rooted in Southeast Asia, shaped by global influence.

Our approach to floristry in Kuala Lumpur reflects through this dialogue between local and imported materials, we create works that are not simply beautiful, but culturally layered. Works that reflect both global design understanding and the realities, materials, and sensibilities of Southeast Asia. What emerges is not Western. Not purely local. But a contemporary floral language unique to this region – one still evolving, one still being written.
